ZACHARY HARIS ONG

PRINCIPAL

Zachary Haris Ong (M.wREGA) graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Design from Curtin University of Technology, Australia. He is passionate and committed to the transformation of the design industry in order to impact Malaysia’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Zachary advises and collaborates with government agencies to chart and spearhead the national design directive.

He has co-created multiple design conferences, workshops, and seminars to empower design students, businesses, and professionals with new and cutting-edge domains of design knowledge.

Zachary was instrumental in assembling the first coalition of all design-related associations to be united under the Malaysia Design Council, for the purpose of creating a new future for the design industry of Malaysia.

This encompassed the major design fields in Malaysia, namely architecture; interior design; graphic design; industrial design; fashion design; advertising; and invention design. For his work, Zachary was nominated for the prestigious 7 Bintang Lifetime Achievement Award at Kuala Lumpur Design Week 2011, given in recognition of individuals who have made significant contributions to the creative industry of Malaysia.

Zachary led the Rediscovery: ico-D Design Week in Sarawak 2012, and was the President of the Graphic Design Association of Malaysia (wREGA). He was listed in Prestige magazine’s Top 40 Movers and Shakers of Malaysia Under 40. Zachary also accepted his appointment as an Indigo Ambassador by the International Council of Design (ico-D).

In October 2015, Zachary was unanimously voted as the first Malaysian and first ASEAN President Elect of ico-D during its 26th General Assembly in Gwangju, South Korea. His appointment as President Elect marks the recognition of Malaysian talents by the international design community.

AREZ EZMAN

ASSOCIATE
Creative Director

Arez Ezman (M.wREGA, DPIN-JPK) is an Associate, and is the Creative Director for Zachary Haris Ong & Associates. An illustrator and graphic designer from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, he has over the years been a whisper between clients as digital merc, servicing the likes of Lamborghini and Khazanah National Bhd. Rarely seen in public, he is often spotted in important gastronomic establishments from time to time – particularly ones that serve gourmet burgers.

Arez accepted the position of Committee Member and Ethics Chair of the Graphic Design Association of Malaysia (wREGA) in 2014, and was appointed Vice President in May 2016 for the 2016-2017 term. He was recognised as a Registered Industry Expert by the Ministry of Human Resources, after being part of the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation’s (MDEC) National Occupancy Skills Standard (NOSS) competency programme for three years in a row soon after.

Additionally, Arez is a regular contributor to CutOut Magazine, which won the Best of Golden Pin Design Award in 2014 and Communication Design: Reddot Design Award 2015. Subsequently, he produced the official logo for the Malaysian Design Council’s (MRM) inaugural The Malaysian Design Festival (MaDe 2014), which was ultimately approved by the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation (MoSTI).

As the journey continues, Arez hopes to recapitulate the growth of the industry on an international strata, developing global requirements to achieve an optimal highly-skilled workforce through education, experience, and – of course – design.

GAN AARON

ASSOCIATE
Project Manager

Gan Aaron (M.wREGA) majored in Multimedia Design (Tunku Abdul Rahman College @ TARC) and Digital Media Design (Liverpool John Moores University @ LJMU), before leaving post-production house MFX to become an educator. Graduating as first cohort from both institutions, his concerns regarding students’ learning experiences led him to create several course initiatives during his early years in design education.

Constantly searching for possibilities, Aaron went on to volunteer as an Agent of Change for Make-Condition Design/thinklab, partaking in design events – including MAKMAL© Series and DesignLab© – whilst managing online appearances and creating a digital archive for the organisation.

Between teaching and volunteering, he founded the idea of RenderBox and – a year later – ARC | HIVE as a platform for design educators and students to collaborate with regards to design. Craving for greater challenges, Aaron worked alongside the team behind the VGA Fest 2013 as its Operations Manager. Currently, he is a lecturer/software instructor with an emerging art and design faculty.

Aaron voluntarily offered his services for the Graphic Design Association of Malaysia (wREGA) as Webmaster and Archivist in 2013, and served as wREGA’s Honourary Secretary for 2014-2016.

As a practitioner, designer, educator, and now an associate with Zachary Haris Ong who is enjoying the learning curve on project management, he commits to managing creative projects by providing utmost value on clients’ demands for professional and qualitative design service.

Aaron believes that a client and designer relationship depends entirety on communication, where smaller goals are merely untapped potentials of bigger visions.

“From the emptiness and nothingness, create that possibility,” he was once told. And when someone once asked, “How do you make people do impossible things?”, his answer was: “They need not know that it’s impossible at first.”
